More about us
Montagu Winery: A Legacy of Liquid Gold
Our Roots
Our story began in 1941, rooted in the sun-drenched soils of Montagu. From the very beginning, we committed to a single, uncompromising standard: crafting exceptional wines from the finest fruit.
Muscadel was the star of the era, and it quickly became our signature. In fact, our cellar’s unique, time-honoured methods laid the foundational blueprint for the iconic Monis Marsala and Moscato—a historic craft we still proudly practice today.
The Evolution
While our heritage is anchored in legendary sweet wines, we’ve gracefully evolved with the times. Today, Montagu Winery is equally celebrated for our exceptional, elegant dry table wines. Our collection is a masterclass in regional expression, backed by an impressive array of regional champion trophies.
A World-Class Reputation
We don’t just make wine; we make history. Regularly named the Champion Producer Cellar of our region, our Red Muscadel has earned a legendary status. Selected four times for the prestigious Nederburg Wine Auction, it was famously lauded by international critics as “the best wine for the price anywhere in the world.”
From 1941 to the present day, we invite you to pour a glass and taste the enduring soul of the Klein Karoo.
Meet the manager

Hermias Vollgraaff
Crafting Excellence, From Vine to Bottle
For Hermias, winemaking isn’t just a career—it’s a hands-on passion. As the Manager at Montagu Winery, Hermias guides the entire lifecycle of every vintage. From hand-selecting the finest grapes directly from the vineyards to overseeing the precise art of fermentation, aging, and bottling, his fingerprints are on every single glass. This holistic approach allows him to truly live out his winemaking philosophy, shaping raw Klein Karoo fruit into award-winning liquid art.
Cellar favourites
While every bottle tells a story, Hermias has two definitive favourites from the cellar:
• The Chenin Blanc: A crisp, expressive, and versatile classic that is consistently an absolute winner.
• The Red Muscadel: A rich nod to our historic roots and a true regional masterpiece.
Beyond the cellar
When he isn’t in the tasting room or among the barrels, Hermias is almost always found outdoors. A massive sports enthusiast, he traded the rugby fields of his earlier years for the rugged beauty of mountain biking trails and the green fairways of the golf course. For someone who thrives on fresh air and nature, Montagu’s dramatic landscapes provide the ultimate playground to recharge and find fresh inspiration for the next harvest.
Meet the winemaker

Chris de Villiers
From Vision to Vintage
Chris de Villiers’ journey into winemaking stems from a deep-seated love for creation and tangible results. For Chris, the ultimate motivation is the reward of the end product—seeing a vintage come to life and knowing he had a direct hand in shaping it. He is deeply immersed in every phase of the process, from scouting the vineyards for perfect fruit to the technical artistry of fermentation and bottling. This hands-on creation is how Chris channels his true passion, turning raw elements into an exceptional sensory experience.
Cellar favourites
The Cabernet Sauvignon: Bold, structured, and beautifully expressive of our unique terroir. For Chris, this exceptional red stands out as a true testament to the reward of patient craftsmanship.
Beyond the cellar
Outside the cellar walls, Chris is fuelled by the great outdoors and the thrill of development. Whether he is exploring the natural landscapes surrounding Montagu or brainstorming new concepts, his mindset is always focused on growth, innovation, and bringing fresh ideas to fruition.

She blends an intimate knowledge of our vintages with a natural, home-grown warmth, guiding visitors through our rich history one glass at a time.

Beyond the cellar
When she isn’t sharing our wines with guests, Stephanie is busy managing her favourite team of all: her four kids! Life at home is a wonderful whirlwind of family adventures, school activities, and outdoor fun. For Stephanie, keeping up with four children requires the same things that make her a fantastic manager—limitless energy, a love for people, and a knack for making everyone feel completely at home.
