More about us
De Krans Wine Cellar is situated along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley near Calitzdorp. The history of the farm dates back to 1890, when it was bought by the Nel family. Since 1985, most of the classic Portuguese Port and wine varieties have been planted. The present owners and cellar master are brothers Boets (who qualified as a Cape Wine Master in 1997) and Stroebel Nel – the viticulturist.
The Garden Route range is a small range of premium, cool-climate wines from grapes grown in the Upper Langkloof area on the foothills of the Outeniqua mountains and grapes from the foothills of the Kammanassie mountains, from two of the most exciting varieties in South Africa, Sauvignon blanc and Shiraz, at affordable prices – this in essence is the motive behind the creation of the Garden Route range of wines.

Meet the winemaker

Christoff de Wet
Christoff de Wet, formerly winemaker at Lutzville Vineyards, has joined the team at De Krans Wines as their new winemaker, taking over the reins from Louis van der Riet.
Born and bred in Stellenbosch surrounded by a growing wine fraternity, it soon became evident that it would become his career choice. After completing his schooling he embarked on a gap year, not for one year which is normally the case, but two years. During this time he worked in Sonoma (California) to gain additional experience before enrolling at Elsenburg upon his return, obtaining his diplomas in Oenology and Viticulture.
After his studies the ‘wine working travel bug’ was still persistent and he headed off to Australia and California, completing two harvests in one year. In 2010 he joined the team at Distell as Assistant Winemaker for the Bergkelder, and remained there for approximately eight years.
His favourite wine from the cellar
The De Krans Touriga Nacional.

When he’s not in the vineyards or cellar you are bound to find Christoff hiking or camping. A keen sportsman tennis is one of his all-time favourite sports, and he has completed four Cape Town Cycle Tours.
