Tucked away in a fertile hamlet at the very edge of the Cape Winelands and at the heart of the Klein Karoo, one finds Boplaas Family Vineyards and the Nel family, whom since 1880, have tended vines and crafted wines in Calitzdorp.
Spirits have been distilled at Boplaas since 1880, when the first order of potstill brandy casks were sent to Cape Town by ox wagon for delivery to London. Today, Boplaas produces an extensive range of world class wines and specialises in Portuguese and Mediterranean varietal table wines and Cape Port style wine and spirits – including whisky, brandy and gin.
Boplaas thrives upon the involvement of the 6th generation of Nel’s that brings new energy and inspiration to the business. Rozanne heads-up Marketing, Margaux as Winemaker and Daniel as Distiller and Marketer.
In keeping with the biodiversity initiative, Boplaas has devoted 5000 ha exclusively to nature conservation objectives, while a portion of income generated by wine exports, is budgeted for conservation.

Meet the winemaker
Margaux Nel
Margaux Nel is the winemaker at Boplaas Family Vineyards and daughter of Carel Nel. She grew up on the farm in Calitzdorp and loves the Klein Karoo, doing her MScAgrig in Viticulture on Touriga Nacional in 2009.

She likes hiking in the veldt, touring the globe and drinking interesting wines.
Meet the distiller
Daniel Nel
Daniel Nel is the 7th generation distiller at Boplaas Family Vineyards. He is in charge of the distilling of Cape brandy, whisky and gin.

Meet the tasting room personnel
Corina Jacobs works in the tasting room at Boplaas Family Vineyards, helping with wine tastings and sales. She is the first person you see when entering and also the person responsible for making sure that every experience at Boplaas is an enjoyable event, where you leave with a great product and a little bit more knowledge.

She loves the Gamka Red, a blend of Shiraz and Portuguese varieties, uniquely Boplaas.
