The farm Doornkraal lies at the foot of the Swartberg range in the Klein Karoo, a part of South-Africa also known by its original name, Kannaland. Here the Le Roux family has been farming for generations. Doornkraal’s basic philosophy is that wine is a gift from God to enhance life. Wine was made for man and not the other way around.

Doornkraal Farm Stall

Doornkraal Padstal has become a landmark attraction for Klein Karoo wines and unique local farm produce. The farm stall is situated 8km outside De Rust on your way to Oudtshoorn, as part of the R62 route. The wine tasting venue stocks the total sum of 20 wine producers from the Klein Karoo at cellar prices. So, no need to drive around, since this is the only wine one-stop in the region. Truly a new world to be discovered, since most Klein Karoo wine farms are boutique wine farms producing the most magnificent wines, one of the best kept secrets in the Western Cape.

Light snacks, local sweets, pastries and pies from the farm, olive products and cheese from the region, various jams, chutneys, and unique products produced at the farm Doornkraal (e.g. Karoo-bossie smoked salt and pumpkin seeds, wine vinegar, quince cheese and moskonfyt) make a visit to Doornkraal Padstal an unforgettable experience. “Tante Maria” recipes’ from many years ago are honored with every product leaving the farm, you can be assured that you will taste the charm and warm heartedness’ of the Klein Karoo in every product.

Accommodation

Doornkraal Kothuis is an Edwardian-style cottage built in the tranquil shade of a 100 year old oak and sleeps 5 . It is  a totally private, self-contained house comprising of 2 suites with adjoining bathrooms – one with a romantic 4-poster bed, the other with a three quarter and a single bed. Specially chosen family antiques and eclectic artwork add further charm and unique style. Well equipped kitchen and outside BBQ area with spellbinding views across the sweeping valley and hills.

 

Kerneelia Kothuis is a charming self-catering cottage with a mountain view in a romantic setting.  The bedroom has a romantic queen-sized bed that can be converted to 2 single beds and a three quarter bed in the living room. One bathroom with a shower, washbasin and toilet. Fresh milk and butter is available in the fridge and in the morning a breakfast basket with scones, fruit, yogurt and fresh bread is delivered on the stoep.

 

Guests are warmly welcomed to experience all facets of Doornkraal, a traditional and fully functional Klein Karoo farm. Scenic walks amongst the fields and hills, cycling on footpaths or farm roads and excursions on our Cape Riding Horses, direct descendants of the noble horses featured in South Africa’s epic history, are a few favourite and fully-inclusive activities.

Venue

Our venue, which we call Tante Maria se Stal, is a charming venue with modest old world character. Once a stable for farm animals, it is a happy place to host all sorts of events (including weddings)  for 10 or more guests. Call us for more details and options.
