September is the first month of spring with the promises of the new season and new beginnings. What a fitting time to introduce our 2009 vintage champions and various other show results. A toast to the variety of the Klein Karoo!

  

The results of the Klein Karoo Young Wine Show always have some surprises in store and 2009 was no exception.  Calitzdorp Cellar was appointed the Champion Co-op Cellar with their Champion Shiraz being the Champion Red Table Wine of the show. The Reserve Champion Co-op Cellar is Uitvlucht Wines in Montagu with their Red Muscat – the Champion Wine.  The Champion Non - Muscat Fortified Wine from Excelsior-Vlakteplaas is the Reserve Champion Wine.

 

The Champion Private Cellar is Boplaas Family Vineyards who entered the Champion Cabernet Sauvignon and shared the trophy for the Champion Dry White Table Wine with Rietrivier Cellar.

 

Rietrivier Cellar also entered the Champion Chenin Blanc and shared the Champion Pinotage trophy with De Krans Cellar, the Reserve Champion Private Cellar. Southern Cape Vineyards produced the Champion Sauvignon Blanc, Champion Chardonnay and Champion Ruby Cabernet.  Kango Wines in Oudtshoorn is champion with their Natural Sweet Table Wine and Merlot.

At the 2009 SA National Young Wine Show, Uitvlucht Wines came out tops with their Red Muscadel, taking the trophy for the best Muscadel on the show as well as two gold and 3 silver medals.   De Krans Cellar received 1 gold and 3 silver medals while Calitzdorp Cellar has 1 class winner, 1 gold and 5 silver medals.  Boplaas Family Vineyards took the Sauvignon Blanc trophy as well as 2 other class winners, 1 gold and 6 silver medals. 

  

Each year bottled wines are judged in the Southern Cape Bottled Wine Show.  Only wine made from grapes harvested in the region may be entered.  2009 delivered a few exciting results.

 

De Krans Wine Cellar was appointed as the Champion Cellar and Uitvlucht Wines as the Reserve Champion Cellar in the region with their Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, the Champion Dry Red. 

 

The Madder Botha Trophy for the Champion Wine was awarded to the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2006, the Champion Port of the competition.  The cellar received the trophy for the Champion Unusual Red Wine, a Touriga Nacional 2008.

 

Karusa Private Producer received a trophy for the Champion Dry White, a 2008 Chardonnay/Viognier blend.  The Champion Potstill Brandy, Joseph Barry Potstill 5 Year, was entered by Barrydale Cellar and the Calitzdorp White Muscat 2007 is the Champion Fortified Wine of the competition

Shiraz is making its mark in the Klein Karoo.  Congratulations to Piet Geldenhuys at Kango Wines with his Kango Shiraz 2008.  The wine took second place at the 2009 Shiraz Challenge and was nominated Best Value at the same competition. Well done!

   

Platter’s South African Wine Guide just released their 5-star results. A total of 41 wines out of 6 000 tasted, received a 5-star grading.  Three of these wines are from the Klein Karoo. 

Boplaas Family Vineyards received a 5-star grading for their Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2007 and Boplaas Cape Tawny Port 1997

De Krans Wine Cellar got 5 stars for their Cape Tawny Port (N/V) and 4˝ stars for their Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2007.
