Dear
reader
September was indeed an introduction to spring
and new beginnings. The veldt is carpeted with
wild flowers and fresh greenery – the most
beautiful spring the Klein Karoo has had for a
long time. This was also the month in which
wonderful events took place, promising an
exciting season to come... |

A bottle of
1800 Jaubert Muscat d'Alexandrie
was rated, on the online publication
ERobert Parker, by Neal
Martin 99/100. The highest
score ever for a South African wine
by the publication. The sweet
dessert wine is produced by the
extended Joubert family of
Joubert-Tradauw from a single 100
litre French oak barrel. This is the
oldest barrel of wine in South
Africa (circa 1800) and 12 x 275ml
bottles are produced from the barrel
annually. After bottling, fresh
Muscat wine is used to top up the
barrel, thus implementing the Solera
system.
To bid on a bottle of this rare
wine, please visit the silent
auction on the
www.allanmullinstribute.com
website. The successful bidder that
beats the previous auction price of
R60 000, will be invited to taste
the wine from the barrel and is
allowed one refill of his/her
bottle. |

A Muscadel
Makietie was held in Montagu by
the Klein Karoo wine muscadel
producers, as a way to shift
expectations and connotations of
this cultivar. Christelle Reade-Jahn
from the SA Brandy Foundation was
the speaker at the event,
highlighting the history and
importance of this noble cultivar in
South Africa’s history and the bond
dessert style Muscadel wines share
with brandy. But the day was all
about the versatility of Muscadel,
showcasing the wines of the Klein
Karoo with an extensive and
innovative menu by Chef Hetta van
Deventer.

event or the Muscadels of the Klein
Karoo, please contact

The auspicious
Cape Winemakers’ Guild (CWG) of
which Carel Nel has been one of the
longstanding members and the only
from the Klein Karoo, is holding its
annual auction on Saturday the 1st
of October at the Spier wine centre,
just outside of Stellenbosch.
Carel has two wines on this year’s
auction, the blockbuster Boplaas CWG
Auction Cape Vintage Reserve Port
2006 and the sublime Boplaas CWG
Auction 10 year old Cape Potstill
brandy. The Cape Vintage Reserve
Port 2006, is an auction selection
of the finest barrels and is one of
the finest Ports ever to come out of
the Boplaas cellar with an ageing
potential in excess of 50 years. The
10 year Cape Potstill brandy,
produced in an old copper potstill
in much the same way as the first
Boplaas Brandy in 1880, is a
concentrated, complex and sublimely
smooth tipple which is a testament
to the distilling prowess of the
Klein Karoo. |
