Dear reader

This year the wine producers in the Klein Karoo and Southern Cape are doing extremely well with accolades flowing in. The challenge now is to emphasize the diversity of these regional wines, combining the wine with food. Please read more about the menu we put together and the innovative way Karusa Private Producer makes up a tapas picnic basket.

In September, wines from the Klein Karoo were paired with bite sized, tasty morsels, prepared by chef Hetta Terblanche. A few lucky guests were invited to try these sumptuous combinations.

The menu consisted of Karusa Karoo Classique Chardonnay/Pinot Noir N/V served with fresh oysters, spiced ribbon noodles, goat’s milk cheese and lemon salsa, followed by the Axe Hill Dry White Port and kingklip with curried grape chutney. Karusa Earths’ Art Chardonnay/Viognier 2008 went well with smoked salmon in cream phyllo baskets and the Joubert- Tradauw R62 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 was served with duck ravioli and blackberry jus. This was followed up by the Boplaas Ring of Rocks 2006, served with lamb in a liquorice sauce (think buchu and Klein Karoo veldt!) The Uitvlucht Shiraz 2008 and the venison boboti with a pepper salsa worked well together, the closing drew nearer with De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2006 and a green fig preserve and cheese tartlet. The tasting was concluded with the Joseph Barry Potstill Brandy 10 Year Pot Still and a honey and bandy infused tiramisu.

The wine garden at Karusa with the great Swartberg as backdrop is the perfect site to savour their exquisite wines.

A must try is the Karusa Stonerock Viognier 2009. This is the only barrel fermented Viognier from the Southern Cape region, combining the power of a red wine and the crisp elegance of a white wine, releasing aromas of dried peach, honey blossom and marmalade with peppery and spicy undertones. The palate is fat and full and pairs great with lasagne, roast duck and even barbequed snoek.

To complement the wines, enjoy the Karoo inspired tapas picnic baskets. From ostrich carpachio and Karoo olives with fresh bread and a variety of cheese - a sensual experience of the Karoo with locally produced delicatessen being used throughout.

A warm welcome to Elsa Carstens, the new manager at Uitvlucht Wines and Rietrivier Cellar in Montagu.

Elsa was previously from Audacia Wines in the Stellenbosh region and is looking forward to this new challenge in die Klein Karoo.

Yours Sincerely
