Dear reader

Henry Haarhoff of Staveco presented a workshop on wood integration in wine at the Oudtshoorn Wijnhuis for the winemakers of the Klein Karoo and with Johannes Mellet of Vinpro, they discussed the finer points of making Chenin blanc and Shiraz – just in time to experiment on the 2012 harvest!

The Joubert-Tradauw R62 Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 was chosen for the 2012 SAA Wine List. The wine was fermented in Burgundy barrels for eleven months in 30% new and 70% 2nd and 3rd fill. It has a classic nutty almond character with hints of ripe citrus and tropical fruits.

Boplaas Family Vineyards are proud to announce the release of a host of new vintages, as this is the culmination of all the dedication and hard work by their vineyard and winemaking teams. The ethos behind the Boplaas range of table wines is the crafting of authentic, supremely drinkable, exceptional quality and value wines for everyday enjoyment.

The Boplaas Sauvignon Blanc 2011 abounds with vibrant tropical fruit aromas, a hint of greengage and lime with gentle acidity. The Unwooded Chardonnay 2011 is bursting with green apple, citrus and hints of melon, over-deliver on value at the R35 per bottle price tag from the cellar. Both will make excellent pool-side companions this summer or whenever the need arises for a great glass of white wine.

The Boplaas Shiraz 2008 is a tad bolder and assertive than the preceding 2007 vintage, and with its bouquet and palate of ripe mulberry, raspberry, bramble, pepper and hints of leather it sure makes a great accompaniment to rustic fare, a good movie, a mid-week bowl of spaghetti bolognaise, vegetable lasagne or just on its own. The Boplaas Shiraz 2008 is available from the cellar door from R45 per bottle, as are the supple, silky and seriously delicious Boplaas Merlot 2010, the classic old-school Boplaas Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (9 months in old French barels and an alcohol of 13.5%) and the ripe, roaring rambunctious Boplaas Pinotage 2009.

Our new vintage wines, as well as a host of rare Postill brandies and Cape Ports are available for tasting from our cellar door in Calitzdorp, as well Cool Bay Wine’s cellar door in Little Brak. For more information please contact the cellar at 044 213 3326 or marketing@boplaas.co.za.

“Verjus de Karusa” Innovative and creative winery Karusa has just released the first verjus - green grape juice - in the Southern Cape. Verjus is the perfect elegant alternative to vinegar and limejuice and used for deglazing, as salad dressing with olive oil and a wide range of reduction sauces. Made from green harvested grapes that are picked to decrease the production of a vineyard (and increase wine quality) the product is a must for the culinary connoisseur.

With a high acidity and tangy sweetness, the clean fresh flavours enhance meals enjoyed with wine and have an “opening up” affect on the taste buds. Vinegar and lime juice has the opposite affect on the tongues tasting ability.

“Verjus de Karusa” is sold from the winery for R20/375ml. For further details contact Melissa at the cellar 044 272 8717 or info@karusa.co.za.
