Dear reader

It is November and the wine accolades are still coming in. Please read more about our award-winning wines, the unique gift pack from Barrydale and Boplaas Family Vineyard’s new Cool Bay tasting facility.

Making brandy is akin to alchemy, when nature’s elements -earth, wind, water and fire - are transformed into gold. The finest grapes, grown in areas designated for brandy making are nurtured by sun, rain and wind, picked at optimal ripeness, vinified, distilled, aged in wood and then blended by seasoned master distillers to bring you the sensory pleasures of gold in a glass ... This is how the SA Brandy Foundation views their exclusive products.

One of these jewels are found right here in the Klein Karoo, in Barrydale. To celebrate the season and their exceptional achievement in the last 5 years, unique gift packs are released by Barrydale Cellar for the Christmas season. Three international award-winning brandies are grouped together for the price of R720. Definitely a steal.

The brandies are:
1 bottle Barry and Nephews 2005 IWSC Category winner (Gold)
1 bottle Barry and Nephews 2009 IWSC Category winner (Gold)
1 bottle Joseph Barry 10 year 2009 IWSC Category winner (Gold) and Brandy-of-the-World
   Award.

The Brandy Booklet is the answer. Heads, hearts and tails sections of brandy? What’s an estate brandy; a brandy balloon; the difference between brandy and cognac?

The South African Brandy Foundation released a nifty new booklet on South African brandy dealing with most frequently asked questions (FAQ).

The FAQ brandy booklet follows on the growing need for brandy education, which goes hand in hand with the steady growth in the brandy market, specifically in the premium sector.

It forms part of the South African Brandy Foundation’s comprehensive consumer programme aimed at brandy education and raising awareness of South African brandy’s superior quality.

The contents, divided in seven concise sections, includes to the point information on topics ranging from types of grapes and wine used to make brandy; the art of distillation; maturation and blending; brandy styles and practical advice on storing and serving brandy, to where to visit a brandy distillery. Attractive and easy to read, the booklet has been compiled by brandy experts, making it a credible introduction to this field.

The FAQ booklet is available free of charge to culinary, beverage and bar training institutes. Complimentary copies are also available at brandy distilleries on the two brandy routes, i.e. the R62 and Western Cape Brandy Routes.

To order a free copy of the FAQ brandy booklet, e-mail The South African Brandy Foundation at info@sabrandy.co.za or fax 021 886 6381.

Meet the tasting room personnel. Elanza du Toit is the face behind the wine counter at Uitvlucht Wine Cellar. Her duties include administration, presenting wine tastings, handling wine sales and operating the switchboard.
