Dear

We have new members, new wines, new wine awards
... An exciting time in the wine industry
calendar. June is full of expectations of work
well done and things that might be. Herewith
some snippets of what to expect from the members
of the Klein Karoo Wine Route over the next few
months. |

Welcome to our newest member. Karusa
Vineyards is the first private wine
cellar in the beautiful Schoemanshoek near
Oudtshoorn on the road to the world renown
Kango Caves. They are the only cellar in the
region producing Cap Classique with
classical Champagne cultivars such as
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
|
 |
The first vineyards were planted in 2006 and
after three years of climate and soil study, it
was decided that mainly Mediteranian style wines
will be produced here. However, the first wine
under the cellar’s name was produced in 2004
from grapes sourced in the region, focusing on
the export market. These ranges include:
Karusa Lifestyle Collection:
Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon 2008; Pinotage Rose
2009; Sauvignon Blanc/Chenin Blanc 2009
Reserve Collection:
Earth's Art Chardonnay/Viognier 2008; The
5th Element Syrah/Viognier 2007
Karoo Classique Collection: Cuvee de la
Maison Chardonnay/Pinot Noire; Prestige Cuvee
Blanc de Blanc 2006
Cellar master, Jacques Conradie, aims to
become one of the leading producers of organic
wines in South Africa and will present their new
tasting room to the public during the Klein
Karoo Klassique festival from 14 to 16 August in
Oudtshoorn.
For more information, please contact Saretha
Conradie at 083 9955

Boplaas Family Vineyards in
Calitzdorp has received top results
in the annual Wine Magazine Port
Tasting. Their Cape Tawny
Show Reserve received 4½ stars,
the highest grade of all the Tawny
ports entered. The same port
received a double gold medal at
Veritas last year.
At the tasting, the Boplaas Cape
Ruby Port was awarded the Best
Ruby Port with a 3½ star grading.
Boplaas Cape Ruby Port was awarded
best in its category in South Africa
at the 2008 Port Challenge.
Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2006
was awarded 4½ stars in the Vintage
Port category, having received a 5
star grading earlier in the 2009
John Platter Wine Guide.
Calitzdorp is definitely the Port
capital of South Africa with top
achievers from this area. Boplaas

De Krans Wine Cellar has done
well at the 2009 Decanter Awards
in London. Both their Cape Tawny
Port and Cape Vintage Reserve
Port 2001 have received a silver
medal in this prestigious
international competition.
The wines were judged together with
classical Port wines from Portugal
and the medals awarded to these two
wines were the highest for any
fortified wine entry from South
Africa.

cellar at

Bring a picnic and join the
Dendrological Society at Herold Wines on
Monday 22nd June at 10h00 for a wine
tasting, followed by a walk through
recovering Fynbos and pockets of mountain
forest.
Experts will lead the walk to search for and
identify trees once endemic to the area and
now returning to the Herold Wines property
in the Outeniqua Mountains of the Southern
Cape where over half of the farm has been
restored to natural vegetation in an ongoing
alien eradication programme.
Enquiries Vivien Harpur at cell phone

Meet the tasting room personnel.
Ronel Immelman’s duties include
administration and receiving visitors in the
tasting room at Calitzdorp Wine Cellar.
Her favourite wine from the cellar:
Calitzdorp Shiraz.
Fact about Ronel you probably did not
know:
She likes running around in shopping malls
on Saturdays, but Sundays are reserved for
her family.
