Dear reader

Winter has certainly arrived in the Klein Karoo along with low temperatures, frost and snow. We do hope that the cold will last and that the vineyards will have the rest they deserve. If you are visiting our region, please try some of the new releases and award-winning wines.

The 2006 Joubert-Tradauw Syrah was awarded a silver medal and was one of the top ten at the 2010 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. It also has a 4 –star rating in the 2010 John Platter South African Wine Guide and was recommended 3 stars at the 2009 Decanter Panel Tasting for South African Rhone Varietals.

Tasting notes: Notes of black pepper, flint with wild spicy fruit on the nose and a refreshing acidity on the palate. Slow, natural fermentation with no fining or filtering add to a wine that is complex, yet accessible and soft. The wine is rounded off by the long aging in new and older oak barrels.

A new addition to the Karusa Vineyards portfolio is their vintage blend Soleil de Karusa Red Muscadel. What makes this wine extremely unique, is that it is one of the few barrel-matured Red Muscadels in South Africa. The ageing is done in old French oak barrels, mainly contributing to the smooth integration of the spirits into the wine. The wine is a blend of two vintages, 2009 and 2010, with winemaker Jacques Conradie slowly working towards the ultimate goal of producing the only Solera method Red Muscadel in South Africa in the near future. From only 900 vines on the farm, 1 000 litres were bottled - unfiltered and unrefined.

Tasting notes: Flavours of rose petals, strawberries and raisins with a touch of nuttiness to the palate and a soft, lingering aftertaste.

Treat yourself with sheer Karoo sunshine in a bottle this winter and contact Saretha Conradie at 044 272 8717 or info@karusa.co.za.

De Krans Wine Cellar, situated in the picturesque town of Calitzdorp, has secured the title as overall Champion Port in South Africa for its De Krans Cape Tawny Port at the 2010 Peter Schulz Port Challenge, the biggest port competition of its kind in South Africa.

The same port was recently awarded a 5-star rating by Wine Magazine, in addition to a 5-star rating in the 2010 John Platter South African Wine Guide.

Tasting notes: Coppery gold in colour, hence the name Tawny. The port is smooth on the palate with a coffee-toffee and nutty character. Highly recommended with brown onion soup, coffee and chocolates, the De Krans Cape Tawny Port retails for approximately R80 per bottle.

Not to be outdone by its sibling, the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 1999 faired extremely well in the Museum category of the Peter Schulz Port Challenge 2010. This 1999 vintage has dense aromas of prunes, spice and tobacco with a fleshy, chewy mouthful of flavours and can be purchased directly from the cellar at R350 per bottle. Savour this premium port during the cold winter months, on its own or serve with stronger cheeses.

For more information on these or any other ports and wines in the De Krans range, please visit their website at www.dekrans.co.za, or contact Helet Viljoen or Bessie Barnado at the farm on 044 213 3314 or dekrans@mnet.co.za.

Calitzdorp Cellar has released 5 wines under their new label, namely the 2009 Chardonnay, the 2010 Sauvignon blanc, a Cape Ruby Port, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon and a Hanepoot.

The theme of the new label is true and unique to Calitzdorp, a sketch of the town beacon Besemkop. The green colour on the white wine bottles is the colour of spekbome and the pink colour on the red wine bottles, the colour of klapperbos.

For more information please contact the cellar at 044 213 3301 or info@calitzdorp.co.za.

Meet the winemaker. Christiaan van Tonder was born and bred in the Klein Karoo, studied at Elsenburg and worked at Mooiuitsig in Bonnievale and Sonop in Paarl. He started in 2009 at Rietrivier Wine Cellar.

His favourite wine from the cellar: Red Muscadel. This is after all Montagu.

Fact about Christiaan you probably did not know: He has two dogs, a Jack Russel called Tiekie and a Bullmastiff called Basjan.

His views on the 2010 harvest: The harvest was smaller than last year due to downy mildew, but the quality of the red wines are definitely better. The white wines over all took a bit of a knock.

Yours Sincerely

Ellen Marais
