Dear reader

The cellars of the Klein Karoo have a lot to offer their visitors this festive season. Special tastings and activities will make a visit to the Klein Karoo an experience - so take the R62 as an alternative to the N2, while travelling to and from the Cape.

De Krans Cellar in Calitzdorp offers a variety of products at the cellar during the holidays. Visitors can sample the original Ladismith cheeses whilst tasting the Port or stock up on the popular De Krans Olive Oil. The cellar is also hosting an art exhibition of local artists. Children will be entertained with donkey car rides and a jumping castle.

The cellar can be contacted at 044 213 3314 or dekrans@mweb.co.za.

The Best Brandy Trophy, awarded to Southern Cape Vineyards for their Joseph Barry Potstill Brandy 10 Year at the 2009 International Wine and Spirit Competition, was presented to the general manager, Riaan Marais and the production manager at Barrydale Cellar, Ferdi Smith, at a prestigious Awards Presentation and Banquet in City of London Guildhall. Southern Cape Vineyards were also on the short list for the “Award for Worldwide Distiller” with five other cellars.

Conversations, collaborations and camaraderie: a keen interest and need to share information, learn about and debate matters relating to brandy production has led the South African Brandy Foundation to start a potstill forum. The Potstill Forum will be open to all brandy producers as well as prospective future producers. It will be convened by Dave Hughes, brandy guild member and esteemed expert in the spirits industry. Quality, as well as local and international brandy and spirits trends will be some of the talking points at the six-monthly forum meetings.

The Potstill Forum aims to create greater awareness and understanding of factors influencing brandy quality and styles, global brandy styles and products relating to South African brandy. It also endeavours to help raise the quality and profile of the country’s through sharing and expanding technical knowledge; build a base of international market knowledge and identify synergies and joint opportunities to further build the image and appeal of South African brandy.

The activities of the Potstill Forum will range from tastings, talks by guest speakers, discussion groups and panel discussions to visiting places of interest.

Meet the tasting room personnel. Lynette Faas is the face behind the wine counter at Calitzdorp Wine Cellar. Her duties include administration, presenting wine tastings and handling wine sales.

Her favourite wine from the cellar:

The Calitzdorp Muscadel – because she has a sweet tooth.

Fact about Lynette you probably did not know:

She loves to pamper people and do pedicures and manicures in her spare time.

Yours Sincerely

Ellen Marais
