Dear reader

The Klein Karoo is green and fresh with beautiful clear, crisp days. An ideal time to visit the region and taste some of our world-class brandy and Port in front of a cosy fire. Or join us on the weekend of August, 14 - 16 for a classical festival in Oudsthoorn.

A great honor was bestowed on Southern Cape Vineyards, and especially to Ferdi Smith and his team at Barrydale Cellar when the 2009 International Wine and Spirit Competition results were made known. Their Joseph Barry Potstill Brandy 10 Year received a gold medal, voted Best in Class and was awarded Best Brandy in the World! Although the trophy is no newcomer to South-Africa, it is only the second time that the trophy is won by a private producer in South-Africa.

The Barry & Nephews Muscat Potstill Brandy was awarded a gold medal and voted Best in Class, while the Joseph Barry Potstill Brandy 5 Year was awarded a silver medal. All to show that the Klein Karoo aspire to quality.

The SAPPA Schultz Port Challenge was hosted again this year by the South-Africa Port Producers Association, SAPPA. Here the best Ports from South-Africa compete in different categories for the Peter Schultz Trophy and, no surprise, the Ports from Calitzdorp claimed their dues. The results for the Klein Karoo region were as follows:

Boplaas Family Vineyards with their Boplaas Cape Ruby Port (N/V) was voted Best Cape Ruby Port. De Krans Cellar was the winner in the Cape Tawny Port class with their De Krans Cape Tawny Port (N/V) and the Boplaas Cape Tawny (N/V) was runner up. De Krans Cellar and Boplaas Family Vineyards took both third place in the Cape Vintage Class.

The Peter Schultz Trophy is shared by Riebeeck Cellar Vintage Port 2005 and the De Krans Cape Tawny Port (N/V).

Look out for the release of the first Cap Classique from traditional Champagne cultivars in the Klein Karoo produced by Karusa under their Karoo Classique Collection. The 2006 Prestige Cuvee Blanc de Blancs and Cuvee de la Maison Chardonnay/Pinot Noir will be launched on August, 15 - the official opening of their tasting facility and Karoo Tapas during the inaugural Karoo Klassique festival.

Winemaker Jacques Conradie will host two workshops on Methode Champenoise. “From Base to Bubbly to Karoo Classique” is an in depth and informative workshop on the production of Cap Classique.

Tickets available via Computicket. For further enquiries contact Jacques Conradie at 084 2084 135 or jacques@karusa.co.za.

Think Karoo. Drink Karusa.

Meet the tasting room personnel. Magrieta Jannecke started out as cleaning lady at Calitzdorp Wine Cellar, but today her duties include administration, presenting wine tastings and operating the switchboard.

Her favourite wine from the cellar:
Calitzdorp Rosé and Calitzdorp Merlot – the one is off-dry and the other full and fruity.

Fact about Magrieta you probably did not know:
She is a second mother to her dog, Spyker, as well as many children in her neighbourhood.

Yours Sincerely

Ellen Marais
