The vintners at
Montagu Wine &
Spirits Company do their utmost to
ensure that suitable cultivars are
placed in the right soil under unique
micro-climatic conditions, thus
producing premium grapes to be converted
into quality wines: full-bodied red
wines, crisp dry and fruity off-dry
whites, Port, and full-sweet Muscadel.
Be sure to visit the
renovated reception and wine tasting
area of the cellar, situated on the
outskirts of Montagu.

Meet the winemaker. A warm
welcome to Chris Crafford, the new
winemaker at Uitvlucht Wine Cellar.
Chris is from Montagu and graduated
at the University of Stellenbosch in
Viniculture and Viticulture. He
worked at Merwespont, Landskroon and
La Motte during harvest season and 8
months overseas.
Before coming to Uitvlucht Wine
Cellar, he was assistant winemaker
for 4 years at Boland Wine Cellar in
Paarl. |

Meet the winemaker.
Christiaan van Tonder was born and
bred in the Klein Karoo, studied at
Elsenburg and worked at Mooiuitsig
in Bonnievale and Sonop in Paarl. He started at the Rietrivier Cellar in 2009 which is now part of the Montagu Wine & Spirits Company.
His favourite wine from the
cellar: Red Muscadel. This is,
after all, Montagu.
Fact about Christiaan you
probably did not know: He has
two dogs, a Jack Russel called
Tiekie and a Bullmastiff called
Basjan. |
 |
His views on the 2010 harvest:
The harvest was smaller than last
year due to downy mildew, but the
quality of the red wines are
definitely better. The white wines
over all took a bit of a knock.
