History was made in
Montagu on January 1st, 2010, when two
of our largest wine companies, namely
Rietrivier and Uitvlucht Cellars
combined forces to form Montagu Wine
& Spirits Company Ltd. The two
companies now function and are managed
as one entity, but with two production
sites. The head office and tasting room
facilities of the company are in
Bathstreet, Montagu where Uitvlucht was
previously situated. The other site,
(previously Rietrivier Cellar) is 20 km
further on Route 62 towards Barrydale
and is now used only for production.
The company focuses on the production of
high quality wine that is sold mainly in
bulk, to the trade. The aim of the
amalgamation between the two cellars was
to utilise the diversity in origin of
the grapes better, with the furthest
distance between any two producers being
in the order of 45 km.
A very close relationship exists between
the production personnel and both
winemakers of the two cellars. This
ensures that the best quality grapes are
identified and used in the creation of
quality wine. Montagu Wine & Spirits
Company strives towards becoming a major
player in the bulk wine market. In 2010,
the Company received the award for the
best cellar in the Little Karoo National
Young Wine Show. This is truly a great
start for the road ahead!
The best quality wine produced in a
year, is selected, bottled and sold
under the Montagu Wine & Spirits brand.
Bottled wine from the company is mainly
available from the site in town, but
also in selected retail stores in the
Western Cape. We, therefore, invite all
our clients and prospective clients to
come and meet us and taste our wine and
famous Muscadel at our cellars, in the
beautiful town of Montagu!

Meet the winemaker. A warm
welcome to Chris Crafford, the new
winemaker at Montagu Wine & Spirits Co.
Chris is from Montagu and graduated
at the University of Stellenbosch in
Viniculture and Viticulture. He
worked at Merwespont, Landskroon and
La Motte during harvest season and 8
months overseas.
Before coming to Uitvlucht Wine
Cellar, he was assistant winemaker
for 4 years at Boland Wine Cellar in
Paarl. |

Meet the winemaker.
Christiaan van Tonder was born and
bred in the Klein Karoo, studied at
Elsenburg and worked at Mooiuitsig
in Bonnievale and Sonop in Paarl. He started at the Rietrivier Cellar in 2009 which is now part of the Montagu Wine & Spirits Company. |
