Accessed via the
scenic Montagu Pass – winding its way up
the mountains above George in the Garden
Route - Herold Wines is the only winery
growing, making and bottling wine in the
Outeniqua Ward, Southern Cape. This
family owned farm offers friendly,
relaxed cellar tours, wine tastings,
teas and light meals around the
fireplace in a tasting room set amidst
the tanks and barrels or at sun dappled
tables under the vines at Herold Wines’
cellar.
Farm roads and fynbos footpaths lead to
vineyards and mountain pools. Rugs in
shady spots with views over the
vineyards invite picnickers and wide
open spaces, secret pathways and
hideaways between rocks and trees create
adventures for children and dogs.
The frosty winters and cool misty
summers of the Outeniqua Mountains
contribute to perfect cool climate
conditions and a long ripening season
for the 6ha of vineyard which has
produced quality grapes for Herold Wines
since 2003 - Pinot Noir, Sauvignon
Blanc, a blend of Shiraz/Merlot/Cabernet
Sauvignon, a daringly different
Sauvignon Blanc/ wooded Chardonnay/Pinot
Noir blend and an unusual wooded Pinot
Noir dessert wine.
Accommodation in a two bedroomed farm
cottage makes the ideal base from which
to explore the Garden Route and Klein
Karoo by car, on foot or cycle.
|
The two bed roomed
guest cottage on Herold Wines has had a spring
facelift and is available for accommodation at R350.00 a night for two
plus R50.00 for each additional person.

Meet the PRO. Ingrid
Scheepers has worked for Herold
Wines since 2008. She grew up in
Herold and completed matric in
Oudtshoorn. Her brother Ryk, works
for Herold Wines and their
mother, Gertruida, is one of the
three grandmothers after whom the
cellar’s natural sweet dessert wine
is named. The other
grandmothers are winemaker Vivien's
mother, Gertrude and the “ouma gesiggie” grapes from
which the wine is made.
Her favourite wine from the
cellar:
The Skaamskaap - a Sauvignon Blanc,
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend! It
is an interesting blend that is
delicious, smooth and easy drinking.
Fact about Ingrid you probably
did not know:
Her favourite food is potatoes - in
any form. |
