Axe Hill received three 90 and plus pointers for their Distinta 2016 (90), Machado 2016 (91) and Cape Vintage 2011 (93) in the 2019 Tim Atkin report.

The last wine – the vintage port, was incidentally also handed a Platter 5 Star some years ago. The wines will probably only be released next year some time – but the 2011 Cape Vintage is available from the cellar only, for now!

Machado 2016 – from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Souzão and 5% Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo) which is bound to give it some extra oomph! “Perfumed, stylishly oaked and balanced with cinnamon notes, red fruit and fine-grained tannins”.

Distinta 2016 – a return to the old days, equal parts Tinta Barroca and Souzão. “Aged in old oak, it is at the finer, more floral end of the Calitzdorp spectrum, lots of aromatic spices a hint of violet and plush red berry fruit”.
